Take Care when using cash machines
Humberside Police are asking people to take care when using cash machines in the Hull area following reports that cash machines may have been tampered with in the city.
If you suspect anything suspicious let your bank and the Police know. Call Police on 101.
Card skimming or cloning devices are used by fraudsters to capture card details from unsuspecting members of the public at cash points, ticket machines and retail outlets.
The criminal copies a card's electronic data which is then used to recreate an exact copy of your card and gain access to your money.
When using a cash machine, always shield your PIN. Customers who shield the keypad when entering their PIN are much less likely to fall victim to this type of fraud.
If you see an out of order notice on a cash point which directs you to another machine, be wary.
If you believe your debit or credit card has been cloned, alert the bank immediately.
If you would like more information about fraud you can speak to an adviser at Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.
Always take care of your card - don't lose your money to a fraudster.

Members save up record amount for Christmas
Our members saved up a record amount in their Christmas Saver accounts this year - £400,000.
Members save up small amounts by weekly, fortnighlty or monthly deposits in cash, by transfer from a bank account or by direct deduction from their pay.
Our members really are a thrifty lot, says HEYCU Chief Executive John Smith, and they know how important it is to put a little money aside regularly to plan for what is the biggest spending season of the year.
Our Christmas Saver account - which you can't dip into until 1 November - is one of our most popular products and each year some more members save up in this handy way. It all helps to make sure Christmas doesn't cause a financial headache for local families.
Organisations such as Hull City Council, East Riding of Yorkshire Council, the Humber Bridge Board and local aerosol maker Robert McBride allow their staff to save with the Credit Union by payroll deduction which allows their savings to accumulate very painlessly.

Exciting new product for our members – Our Prepaid Card

We will shortly be launching our Credit Union Prepaid Card. What will this mean for you, our members?
A prepaid card is a simple and safe pay-as-you-go VISA card for Credit Union members.
You can load money on to this flexible, low-cost, not-for-profit card from your Credit Union savings or Current Account. It is also a safe way for us to issue loans to you, on request.
You can then use your prepaid card to make purchases in person or on-line, or to get cash. It can be used wherever VISA is accepted, including abroad.
The prepaid card is a simple and safe way to manage your money. It costs £3.50 to purchase a card and then just 50p each time you load money on to it. There is no charge when you shop with it and no charge if you use ‘cashback’ available at most supermarkets (There is a 75p charge if you use it to withdraw cash from an ATM).
You cannot go overdrawn with a prepaid card as it will only allow you to spend the money that you have loaded on to it.
Apply for a prepaid card at your Credit Union branch. You can load your card through your credit union and the money is available to spend immediately.
Change in law means new opportunities for credit unions
Parliament has approved a Legislative Reform Order (LRO) which makes important changes to the Credit Unions Act 1979. This makes it possible for us to adopt new rules to help us compete more effectively with banks and other financial service providers.
The credit union sector in Britain is small compared to many other countries, such as the United States and Canada, where over 40% of the population belong to a credit union. Our credit unions have, up to now, been hampered by outdated legal restrictions which limit who can join, what services they offer and how they operate.
The LRO now makes it possible for credit unions to provide services to community groups and extend their services to new groups including housing association tenants and employees. Credit unions will also be allowed to pay interest on savings, instead of a dividend, so savers will more easily be able to compare rates.
It is to enable us to take advantage of these legal reforms that we are holding a Special Members Meeting on 17 April and asking our members to vote for a new rule book.
Our fabulous Members’ Lottery
Around £600 in cash prizes every month to be won! Tickets cost just £1 each. There is a Grand Xmas draw to look forward to at the end of every year too – last Xmas we gave away £2,300 worth of prizes! It’s a lot easier to win than the National Lottery.
One of our members recently e-mailed us saying “Thanks to the Credit Union! I was absolutely delighted to find that I had won the top prize last month (£250). I had forgotten that I was even in the Lottery draw. I have added the money towards my savings to buy a bike instead of using the bus to work. It will save me a lot of money in the long run.”
Special General Meeting
On Tuesday 17 April, we will be holding a Special General Meeting for our members. The meeting will ask members to vote to adopt and register the 2012 edition of credit union rules.
This will be held in the Reception Room at the Guildhall, Alfred Gelder Street, Hull at 5:45 pm.

Andrew Percy MP visit to Goole
Andrew Percy, MP for Brigg and Goole, visited the Goole Branch of Hull & East Yorkshire Credit Union (HEYCU) in Pasture Road recently to meet with the staff and learn more about the work of this expanding social enterprise.
Andrew Percy MP commented: “I was delighted to visit the Credit Union and to open my own account whilst there! Many people do not realise just how they could benefit from using the Credit Union.
We have seen a rise in high cost credit in the local area which is concerning. That’s why I would urge people to speak to the Credit Union before approaching these lenders.
In Parliament I am a member of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Credit Unions which aims to raise the profile of these valuable organisations. We are lucky to have a branch in Goole and I hope local people will make use of it.”

New Credit Union laws come into force
On 8 January 2012 a Legislative Reform Order comes into effect which will give credit unions new powers to help serve their members, existing and new, better than ever before.
In a nutshell the new laws will allow credit unions:
- to quote interest rates on savings accounts (if they meet certain standards and they choose to do so);
- to take organisations and businesses into membership as well as individuals;
- to have fewer restrictions on who can join them (for example people who have a connection with their common bond such as working for a firm that is based within it even if they don't live there).
However the new powers will not come into force immediately. To take advantage of them each credit union will have to ask its members to approve a new rule book. This will mean calling a Special General Meeting of our members and we expect this to happen during the first half of 2012. Watch this news page for details of our members meeting.
If you would like more details please contact our Chief Executive direct.

Credit Unions build a better world!
Today 20 October members around the world celebrate the Credit Union Movement’s achievements and unique differences:
What makes us so different?
· CUs are owned by their members and every member counts regardless of how much or little money they have saved.
· CUs exist to serve their members not make a profit. Their purpose is to provide a safe, convenient place for members to save money and access loans at affordable rates.
· Each CU is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors elected by and from their membership.
· CUs aim to help their members and the public learn how to manage their money wisely and encourage young people to catch the savings habit.
· CUs are becoming widely known as trusted and reliable guardians of people’s money, at a time when trust in many well-known financial firms has been lost.
In short, Credit Unions all around the globe are helping to build a better world.
The 8,500 members of Hull & East Yorkshire Credit Union can be proud to belong to the world-wide CU family – all we ask is that you spread the word and help sign up another member!

Driffield Branch Celebrates 6th Anniversary
Congratulations to our Driffield Branch volunteers on completing six years of service to the people of the town and district.
The branch was set up in 2005 to help people to save and benefit from loans at the lowest possible rates, and access fair and affordable everyday banking. It opens twice a week, on Wednesdays and Thursdays in Driffield Community Centre at West Garth. Teams of volunteers have also set up weekly savings clubs at six local schools to help youngsters acquire the savings habit.
As well as running the branch, our volunteers regularly enjoy organising and joining in local events. Money raised at these events is given to good causes usually within the Driffield community. Since 2005 the branch has contributed over £1,000 towards:
· The local NCH branch
· The Old Folks Tea
· The World Credit Unions’ “small change” project
· Age Concern
· Driffield Citizens Advice Bureau
· The Driffield Leader
· Driffield in Bloom
· The local Skate Park
· A local Youth Organisation
· The Pakistan Flood Disaster Fund.
It’s a great example of the credit union ethos, helping to make a better community for all. Well done and thanks to all our Driffield volunteers!
It’s our 12th Birthday!
Hull & East Yorkshire Credit Union celebrates twelve years of successful trading on 10 June 2011.
Only this week the number of adult members passed the 8,000 mark! We also have nearly 700 First Savers.
Since we began in 1999 we have issued over 20,000 low cost loans and estimate that we have saved the community over £6 million in interest charges.
Isn’t it about time you thought about joining The Fairer Alternative? We promise to help you manage your money, not make money out of you. As a part owner of a thriving co-operative business, you get all the benefits of being a Member.
Leaving Hull City Council?
If you are leaving or retiring from the City Council it doesn’t mean you have to close your account with the Credit Union. Lots of members now pay in by bank standing order or even have a deduction from their monthly East Riding Pension payments instead of the payroll deductions they had in the past. So, don’t worry, we can still look after your savings and receive your loan repayments even after you leave Council employment. Just give us a call to tell us you are leaving and set up an alternative means of paying in. And all the best for the future!
Now open earlier in the morning in Hull
With the move to our smart new branch, we’ve taken the opportunity to open 15 minutes earlier most mornings.
Hull Central branch will now open from 9.15 am on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays for your extra convenience. We will still open at 10.00 am on Wednesdays, to allow time for staff training and team briefings.
New office now open in Hull City Centre
Our move to 38 Brook Street HULL HU2 8LA has now taken place. We are now open for business in our new Hull Central Branch and looking forward to seeing members new and old there. Members’ first impressions have been very pleasing, with lots of people praising the light and airy environment of our new branch.
Please bear with us at first as we get used to our brand new surroundings, we will do our very best to maintain the friendly and helpful service that you have been used to, and look forward to welcoming many new members to our Credit Union. We think you will like the improved environment and a handier office to find when you are in town.

Your Credit Union makes managing your money so easy!
As a Credit Union Member you can get the best of both worlds - you can get low-cost loans to spread the cost of those unplanned items that we all face from time to time; at the same time you can also save up with us for future events like Christmas, holidays or a family celebration.
How does it work? Well, simply add a little extra to your regular loan repayments and we’ll look after it safely for you in a Credit Union Savings account until you need it.
For example, suppose you take out a £250 Freedom Loan with us and the repayments are £5.50 a week. Why not set up your bank standing order for £7.00 instead. Then, in a year’s time, not only will your loan be fully paid off, you’ll also have £82 saved up in your Credit Union Savings account!
Look at these other examples, and discover how your Credit Union can help you get on top of your finances:

Martin Lewis backs credit unions
Money saving expert and consumer advocate, Martin Lewis, recently put his weight behind a campaign to raise the profile of Credit Unions.
Martin said: Credit unions are there to look after members of their community. You can save with them in the good times and borrow back from them in the bad times. It’s the perfect institution for doing just that.

Important information from the Financial Services Compensation Scheme
We are covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS). The FSCS can pay compensation to depositors if a credit union is unable to meet its financial obligations. Most depositors – including most individuals and small businesses – are covered by the scheme.
In respect of deposits, an eligible depositor is entitled to claim up to £85,000 (from 1st January 2011). The £85,000 limit relates to the combined amount in all the eligible depositor’s accounts with the credit union and not to each separate account.
For further information about the scheme (including the amounts covered and eligibility to claim) please ask at your local branch, refer to the FSCS website http://www.fscs.org.uk/ or call 0800 678 1100.
