Credit Unions in Britain
Credit Unions are not for profit financial services businesses owned and run by their members to provide them with:
-
easy ways to save;
-
access to low-cost, affordable loans;
-
fair and straightforward bank accounts; and
-
a range of other useful services to help them manage their money wisely.
In Britain credit unions are authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulation Authority. They are part of a worldwide Movement of 53,000 credit unions serving 188 million members in 100 different countries.
Hull and East Yorkshire Credit Union (HEYCU)
HEYCU is one of around 500 credit unions in Britain. We were founded by a group of dedicated volunteers in 1999, to give everyone who lives or works in East Yorkshire (including the City of Hull) access to a range of affordable, excellent value financial services.
We aim to achieve this by creating a sustainable co-operative business which:
-
is locally run by and for its members;
-
shares out its surplus with its members;
-
aims to keep money within the local economy; and
-
works for local people and supports their community.
Our Latest Facts and Figures
In February 2013 we had 10,082 active adult Members and 800 First Savers and were looking after members' savings of over £6 million. Since we began in 1999, we have helped our members by issuing more than 26,000 low-cost loans to a value of over £18 million. And we reckon we've saved them over £6 million in interest charges they would otherwise have paid to doorstep firms and other high cost lenders. We've also shared over £680,000 in dividends with our members as their reward for saving with their business. Why not become part of our success story . . . join today!
We are affiliated to the Association of British Credit Unions (ABCUL), registered under the Data Protection Act and a member of the Financial Services Compensation Scheme and the Financial Ombudsman Service. You can check our registration with the Financial Conduct Authority at http://www.fsa.gov.uk/register/home.do
